15. It seems that not all keystrokes are recorded, why?
16. A fabulous program, but I need it to be a bit more stealthy....
17. Is there a version which includes a password-protected
"dat2txt" so the log file can remain secure?
1. What is the Invisible KeyLogger 97?
Invisible KeyLogger 97 is a keystroke recorder program that runs invisibly under
Windows 95. It logs all keystrokes to a binary file. The binary file can be converted to a
human-readable text file later by running a utility provided with the Invisible KeyLogger
97.
2. What is the purpose of this program?
The purpose of the program is to provide you with a log of what you have typed on your
own computer for later review. System administrators may also use the software to monitor
computer usage with proper warning in advance. Please note that final user assumes all
responsibilities associated with using this program.
3. How does the program work?
The program logs all keystrokes into a binary file. It has a 75 keystroke buffer,
whenever the buffer is full or the computer is idle of keystrokes for about 3 minutes if
the buffer is not empty, the program will dump the keystrokes to a binary file and affix a
time stamp.
4. Will this program start automatically when Windows starts?
Yes, it will. As a matter of fact, the program starts when the Windows logon dialog
procedure starts. So the program will log the Windows logon ID and password and any
Network login ID and password. Be careful with your log file!
5. Can someone view my binary log file with a HEX editor?
No, he/she cannot. The binary log file is scrambled. Only the "dat2txt.exe"
utility provided with the Invisible KeyLogger 97 program can interpret the binary log. If
someone tries to read the binary log with a Hex editor, he/she will only see a bunch of
garbage-like characters. If you do not have "dat2txt.exe", then you cannot see
the content of the log. The "dat2txt.exe" file is NOT required to run Invisible
KeyLogger 97, it's required to view the log, however.
6. How can you tell that the program is running?
The only way to see this program running is to do a
<Alt>-<Ctrl>-<Del>, you will see a process by the name of
"ik". You can terminate the process if you don't want it to run anymore.
However, next time you start Windows, the program will be started automatically again. (Of
course, you can uninstall the program easily.)
7. How much memory does this program use?
Very little. Also depends on what other programs you have running there.
8. What's the difference between the shareware version and the
commercial version?
The shareware version has a 500-keystroke per session limit. That means, after the
program records 500 keystrokes, it will terminate itself. You will need to restart it if
you want to record more keystrokes (Just run ik.exe again.). Also, the shareware version
starts itself AFTER the Windows login and password phase. So the Windows login and
password won't be recorded.
The commerical version has no restrictions. It starts itself at the same time as
Windows Login and Password dialog box appears. So the Windows Login and password will ALSO
BE RECORDED. Be careful with your log!
ONLY YOU can read the log, though. (Both versions)
9. How do I uninstall the IK97 program?
You can uninstall the program via Start button->Settings->Control
Panel->Add/Remove Programs.
Just to make sure that the program isn't running before you start the uninstallation.
You can do this by pressing <Alt><Ctrl><Delete>, if you see a process by
the name of "ik", highlight the process and click on the "End Task"
button.
10. I dragged "ik.dat" over to "dat2txt.exe"
in Windows Explorer, no "ik.txt" was generated! Why?
We didn't implement drag-and-drop for dat2txt.exe. So it won't work. To run
"dat2txt.exe", you can just double-click the file in Windows Explorer. (Make
sure that "ik.dat" is in the same directory as "dat2txt.exe".)
11. I am using a foreign-language keyboard, will IK97 program
work?
Yes and no. If you have a foreign-language (non-standard) keyboard, the program should
have no problem recording all letters and numbers. However, it may give you a wrong symbol
because IK97 is designed after the standard keyboard layout. For example, if you have a
localized British keyboard, when you type a British pound sign "£", you will
get a "#" instead. So test out the shareware version to be sure that the program
meets your requirements.
12. Can IK97 program record keystrokes in a DOS box?
No. Windows treats anything occuring in a DOS box differently from the rest of the
system resources. IK97 doesn't support recording in a DOS box. Check out IKS if you intend
to record keystrokes in a DOS box.
13. I got an error message "Cannot find a required DLL file
MFC42.DLL" when I was trying to run ik. Why?
IK97 program requires MFC42.DLL (920K) and MSVCRT.DLL
(270K) to run. Most systems already have these DLLs, so we didn't include them in our
setup program. If you don't already have them, you can download them by holding down your
"Shift" key on your keyboard and left clicking on the above two links. Save them
to your Windows system directory (default directory is C:\Windows\System). These two
redistributable files are copyrighted 1997, Microsoft Corporation.
14. I don't want the old keystroke log anymore, I want to start
out fresh. How come even after I deleted ik.txt, the previously logged text is still there
the next time I run dat2txt?
What "dat2txt.exe" does is to convert "ik.dat" to human-readable
text format. If you want to delete the old log, delete "ik.dat".
"ik.txt" will be automatically replaced the next time you run
"dat2txt.exe". Note that it's safe to delete "ik.dat" at any time,
even if your recording is in progress.
15. It seems that not all keystrokes are recorded, why?
We intensionally skipped arrow keys because in most cases, they are used so frequently
that the presence of these arrow keys in the keystroke log really makes the log hard to
read. However, if you prefer to see the arrow keys in your log, just download
a different version of DAT2TXT.EXE here, replace the one that comes with the ik97
program. Then you will be able to see the arrow keys.
Certain Windows system-wide function keys may not be recorded. Such as <Ctrl
Up>-<Alt Up>-<Del> when you press Alt-Ctrl-Del, in this case, <Ctrl
Down><Alt Down> will be recorded, however.
IKS will record all keystrokes including those system-wide function keys.
16. A fabulous program, but I need it to be a bit more
stealthy....
Question: As the shareware IK97 loads (as the computer is turning on), an IK rectangle
appears in the task bar on the bottom of the screen momentarily. On a slower 486, this can
last for about 1 second. Is there a way to disable this?
Answer: Yes. IK97 commercial version starts before the task bar appears, so there isn't
such a momentary icon any more. Of course, you can always use the "stealth"
version, which doesn't even show up with "alt-ctrl-del".
17. Is there a version which includes a password-protected
"dat2txt" so the log file can remain secure?
We currently don't offer such a version. However, if you don't want other people to run
dat2txt to see your log, you can simply delete "dat2txt.exe" file from your
program directory. Later, when you are ready to view the log, copy the "ik.dat"
file to a floppy/directory where "dat2txt.exe" is located and then run
"dat2txt.exe" from there.
